At least 13 people killed and ninety-eight injured in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's key public works projects.

The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” stated the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose term ended the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's developmental goals for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its duties in national projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, defying expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled persistent apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent pause in the development and management of all similar projects.

This pause was proposed while awaiting a full technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been running in full compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these vital initiatives.
