Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that individuals who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing such treatments need to be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to original mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually see a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced something activating and you become starving," said a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Use

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts stress that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle management.
